Symbolist movements have always served as an inspiration for the common visual motifs found in modern fantasy art. The symbolists tried to capture the essence of dreams in their work and escape to a mysterious other realm that exists beyond the dullness of reality. The essence of dreams and the escape to a new realm is a core development in fantasy art as it typically consists of other-worldly realms, fantastical creatures, and idealized situations. At the core, my paintings focus on mythical figures that exist in an invented environment while attempting to grapple with the ideas of fantasy versus reality, organic versus artificial, and idolization versus devaluation. I believe that art is a process of sharing our intangible selves, a reflection of who we are at our deepest core. In relation to the broader field of current artistic practice, my work provides an escape from the tedium of bourgeois life, and allows imagination to run rampant.
My paintings involve the creation of dynamic characters, otherworldly places, and imaginative scenarios that focus on the escape from reality. It becomes a window into another world. At the core, my paintings focuses on human and animal figures that exist in invented surreal environments and is often found to be conceptual in nature. As such, my work contains surreal, mythical, and fantastical elements that attempt to grapple with the ideas of fantasy versus reality, organic versus artificial, and intimacy versus separation. The broad aim of my work is to rekindle the imaginations of my viewers and provide them with a temporary escape into these fantastical and surreal worlds as a means of rediscovering their own imaginations and sense of wonder.
